Well-known businessman and car dealer Mike Thompson died Sunday afternoon at his home on Fairview School Road in Coffee County.

Thompson was the owner of Mike Thompson Ford and Mazda in Tullahoma.

Coffee County deputies are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. According to a report by Coffee County Sheriff Dept. Sgt. Kerry Farrar, Thompson failed to surface while swimming at his residence on Fairview School Road.

According to the deputy’s report, Thompson was with several family members and friends when he jumped off the diving board and into the pool. Witnesses said when he jumped off the diving board he stayed at the bottom of the pool for what they called a long time. He surfaced once and then went back under the water.

According to the report, some of the children present grabbed him and had no response from him. Then family and friends removed Thompson from the pool and found that he was not breathing. They then began CPR.

An ambulance transported Thompson to Harton Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. His body was then transferred to the State Medical Examiner’s office, where an autopsy is to be conducted.

Chad Partin of the sheriff’s department is investigating the apparent drowning.
