The Tullahoma High School girls tennis team won the District 8-AAA tournament championship on Monday, beating Lincoln County 6-1 to earn the title.
Tullahoma will host Siegel on Thursday at 4 p.m. in the TSSAA regional tournament.
Monday against the Lady Falcons, Tullahoma’s Laura Burke fell to Lindsey Bertram 8-2. But Abby Tackett claimed an 8-3 win, Patsy Terry won 8-1 and Taylor Myers picked up an 8-1 victory.
Terry and Taylor Myers then won their doubles match 8-3, which was the fourth and deciding match for the team victory. Matches already in play continued, with Anne Marie Lawson winning in a tough 8-8 (8-6) tiebreak match.
Then in doubles action, Burke and Tackett defeated Bertram and Lorie Pruett in another tiebreak 8-8 (9-7).
In the first round of the district tournament, the Lady Cats blasted Shelbyville. The THS girls rolled over Shelbyville Central last Friday in the 8-AAA tournament opener. The Lady Cats took less that an hour to dispatch of the Eaglettes as THS won its first four singles matches.
Burke won 8-5, Tackett won 8-1, Myers won 8-0, and Terry won 8-1. started play, but Shelbyville chose to forfeit its last three matches.
Tullahoma’s boys were eliminated 4-3 after a couple of very close matches at Shelbyville last week.
At No. 1, Carlos Whited lost 8-1. Reed Gabriel lost 9-7 and J.P. Fraley lost 8-5. The two singles winners were Kenton Culbertson and Caleb Olive. Culbertson had a hard fought win at No. 2 and Olive rallied to win 8-6.
The team went into doubles play needing both wins. Whited and Kenton played an aggressive match after they broke ahead 4-3 and then finished out to win 8-6.
But in the other doubles match, Reed Gabriel and Dean Blanks — who had led in the entire match —fell 8-6.
Tullahoma’s three individual region qualifiers — Burke, Myers and Terry — will compete in the region tournament in Shelbyville on May 14.
