PREP SOFTBALL: Coffee County inches closer to state title at BlueCross Spring Fling

MURFREESBORO – The Coffee County Central softball team opened the TSSAA BlueCross Spring Fling with a convincing 12-2 win over Seymour High School on Wednesday morning. The Lady Raiders than followed that up with a 5-4 upset win over Beech on Wednesday night.

The win over Beech, which sported a 49-2 record entering the tournament, put Coffee County into the winners bracket finals. The Lady Raiders were scheduled to play Soddy Daisy in Thursday’s nightcap.

Soddy Daisy shut out Daniel Boone 2-0 and blanked Munford 10-0 in its first two games.

Beech was eliminated Thursday morning by Daniel Boone.

In Wednesday’s game against Beech, the Lady Raiders and the Buccaneers played to a 2-2 deadlock through four innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, Juli Layne singled, advancing Ginny Clayborne to second base. A sacrifice bunt from Niki Campbell moved the runners into scoring position. Chelsea Howell dropped down another bunt and reached on a fielders choice, scoring Clayborne and giving Coffee County a 3-2 lead.

Taylor Gullet then singled and took second on an error, driving in Layne and Howell in the process. The Lady Raiders could have gotten more, but they stranded three in the inning.

Beech scored two runs on two hits in the seventh, but C.J. McClain grounded out to second base to end the game.

Brianna Jones gave up five hits and struck out five to earn the win for Coffee County.
