BYERS, David Turner “Chunk,” 59, of Decherd, passed away Friday, June 8, 2012 at his residence after an extended illness. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 14, in the chapel of Doak-Howell Funeral Home in Shelbyville with Pastor Ron Bevels officiating. Visitation began at 6 p.m. one hour prior to the 7 p.m. meeting time on Thursday. Mr. Byers was born Jan. 15, 1953, in Lebanon, Tenn., to the late Robert Allison Byers and Guila Lee Vaden Byers. “Chunk” was a man who wore many hats during his lifetime, from being an assistant manager of Crackerbarrel Old Country Store to being a long-haul trucker. He was an avid sportsman who loved the “quiet moments” while sitting in a deer stand on a cold frosty morning to floating down the Duck River in pursuit of an old rustyback smallmouth, all the while enjoying just being on the water. He was a man with so many friends and old buddies that it would seem impossible to keep up with so many names and faces. He was a man’s man. Survivors include who he referred to as his “perfect wife” Carolyn Ann Statham Byers of Decherd, stepsons, Manuel Lee (Jennifer) Statham, Jr., Estill Springs; Derek (Anna) Statham and Logan Statham, and grandchildren, Chelsey, Manuel and Landyn, all of Decherd; aunt, Jewel Wilson, Murfreesboro; siblings, Peggy Sue (Ray) Fox, Lebanon; Walter Robert “Bobby” (Cathey) Byers II, Smyrna; Mary Ann Knight.
