Agents from the TBI and investigators from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department spent July 4 gathering evidence in connection with the murder of 24-year-old Erika Megan Sharpton of Tullahoma.
A passing motorist discovered the nursing student’s body burning in a grassy area just off Awalt Road in Franklin County early Monday morning.
“We have interviewed a number of people in connection with this case,” Franklin County Sheriff Tim Fuller said, adding that investigators have turned up evidence but declined to elaborate on what has been found.
Her body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy, the preliminary results listing “blunt force trauma” as the cause of death.
“We will have to wait for a final autopsy report, but that is the preliminary finding,” Fuller said. Thursday morning.
The TBI, along with Franklin County Sheriff’s investigators and Tullahoma Police Investigator Jason Kennedy searched Sharpton’s East Lauderdale Street apartment gathering evidence, but again the officers would not elaborate on what they have collected.
Sharpton’s vehicle was found Monday afternoon in Bedford County parked in the middle of Three Forks Bridge Road.
The car was spotted by a resident who lives in the area who told police he thought maybe someone had run out of gas, but when no one returned he called Bedford County authorities who traced the license number. Having been alerted about the missing car, they notified Franklin County.
The vehicle is now at TBI facilities in Nashville.
“We feel that other people saw her Ford Mustang sitting in the middle of the road,” Fuller said. “We hope that if they did they will call the sheriff’s department at 931-967-2331 or the TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND and let us know.”
The sheriff also asked that anyone who saw the victim Sunday afternoon or night to contact investigators.
Visitation with Megan’s family will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, July 6, at Tullahoma Funeral Home. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
