PREP GOLF: THS boys snap skid with win at Shelbyville

The Tullahoma High School boys golf team bounced back from a narrow District 8-AAA loss to Lincoln County on Monday to beat Shelbyville on Thursday afternoon.

The Wildcats finished with a 167 on the day, creeping by the host Golden Eagles by 12 strokes to pick up an important district victory.

At River Bend Country Club, Tullahoma’s Bret Schmit carded a 38 to lead the Wildcats, who were still without senior Darrick Fisher. Fisher was wrapping up an American Junior Golf Association tournament in Memphis.

Tullahoma’s Schmit finished just one stroke back of Shelbyville’s Sterling Smith (37). Hunter Statum, a senior, shot a 39 for THS, while Daniel Oswalt had a 44. Carson Bishop was the final Tullahoma scorer with a 46. Andy Shahan’s 49 didn’t count toward the team score.

Behind Smith for the Eagles, Kyle Cunningham fired a 40. Sam Orrell had a 49 and David Parson chipped in with a 53.

Shelbyville Central’s girls had their best effort of the season and finished with a 101 to top the Lady Wildcats, who shot a 117.

Shelbyville’s Amy Beth McGowen shot a 45 to lead the girls. Tullahoma’s Ellen Morataya was next with a 51, while THS teammate Brooke Thomas carded a 66. Daliegh Cares ended the day with a 56 for the Eaglettes.

Tullahoma will be back at home on Tuesday, Aug. 14 as the THS boys and girls host Franklin County in a 9-hole district match at Lakewood Golf & Country Club. Tullahoma will have a rematch with Shelbyville on Thursday, Aug. 16 at Lakewood.

****** In Memphis, Tullahoma’s Fisher wrapped up the AJGA Junior at Southwind presented by True Temper on Thursday with a three-day score of 228. With a 76-75-77, Fisher finished 15 shots over par to place 23rd in the tournament that drew competitors from 14 states, as well a Japan. Connor Smith, of Birmingham, Ala., shot 75-66-72—213 to win the tournament.
