The Community Playhouse Inc. will hold a meeting and acting workshops for those who would like to become a member of the playhouse at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at the South Jackson Civic Center. The workshop will be conducted by Peggy Heyden.

Auditions have also been announced for the playhouse’s first show of the season, “Over the River and Through the Woods.”

Steve Cagley will direct the show. Audition times are as follows: 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8; 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9; and for callbacks, 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10.

Parts for three men (two older, one younger) and three women (two older, one younger) are available.

Production dates for “Over the River and Through the Woods” are Nov. 9, 10, 11 and 16, 17, 18, 2012.

The play, written by Joe DiPietro, tells the story of Nick, a single, Italian American guy from New Jersey whose parents retired and moved to Florida, leaving him as a focus for his four grandparents who still live in New Jersey and with whom he eats dinner every Sunday. This is routine until he has to tell them that he’s been offered a dream job – one that will take him away from his beloved but annoying grandparents.

The news doesn’t sit so well with them. How could he betray his family’s love to move to Seattle, for a job, wonder his grandparents? Thus begins a series of schemes to keep Nick around. Frank, Aida, Nunzio and Emma do their level best, and that includes bringing to dinner the lovely – and single – Caitlin O’Hare as bait.

This proves to provide a hilarious family comedy, loaded with laughs and poignancy. It is sure to bring awareness to audiences of their own family relationships.
