A seven-point deficit after one quarter quickly spiraled out of control for the Tullahoma girls basketball team as it lost its District 8-AAA Consolation Game against Franklin County 78-50 in Columbia on Monday.
Tullahoma (15-16, 6-9) had clinched its seat into the Region 4-AAA Tournament with a 59-56 win over Lawrence County last Friday. The region tournament is scheduled to get underway on Friday, when the Lady Wildcats will head to Riverdale for a 7 p.m. start.
After making it to the semifinal of the District 8-AAA Tournament, Tullahoma was upended by Coffee County on Saturday, sending the Lady Wildcats into the consolation game. In Saturday’s matchup, the Lady Raiders grabbed control of the contest late in the first half and carried that momentum throughout the second half in a 57-37 victory.
Julia Duncan led Tullahoma in scoring on the night, putting up 14 points. Macey Bowman added seven points and Jessica Edde scored six.
Two days later against Franklin County, Tullahoma fell behind 19-9 late in the first quarter. However, the Lady Wildcats closed out the period on a 4-1 run, cutting the score to 20-13 heading into the second period.
Tullahoma struggled to get shots to land and Franklin County took advantage, putting up 21 points in the quarter. Duncan put up six of Tullahoma’s 11 points in the second quarter. McKenna Buckner added two points, while Edde scored three free throws, as the Lady Wildcats trailed 41-24 at halftime.
THS was never able to cut into its deficit as Franklin County took a 63-40 advantage into the fourth quarter, eventually going on to win 78-50.
Duncan led Tullahoma with 18 points on the night. Edde added nine points, while Bowman and Buckner each finished with seven points. CeCe Smith scored five points, while Robin Smedley put up three and Tyana Hardin added a free throw.
Tullahoma had two players voted to the All-District 8-AAA Team, including Duncan who was voted as the district’s Most Valuable Player. Bowman was also an all-district selection. Duncan was also selected to the District 8-AAA All-Tournament Team.
