For me, selecting London’s Bar in Tullahoma for a burger was a no-brainer. Hand-patted and specially seasoned in-house daily, London’s burgers have been voted Tullahoma’s Finest for two years running for good reason.
London’s burger menu includes specialties like the Frito Chili Pie (with Fritos, chili and cheese) and the Big Kahuna (with teriyaki and pineapple), but my personal favorite is the Barnyard Burger, served with egg, bacon and cheddar cheese.
With as near to perfect a bun-to-beef ratio as I’ve ever seen, the burger features a light Kaiser bun, nicely seared premium beef, and rashers of bacon that have a delightful not-too-crispy bite — but the star of the show is the over-medium egg.
There is something spectacular about a perfectly cooked egg yolk drizzling itself over a flavorful burger; it’s nature’s perfect sauce. No ketchup or mustard needed. This isn’t a burger you order just because it’s lunchtime and you have to eat something; this is a burger that sears itself into your memory and demands that you visit it again.
Established in 1973, London’s was bought in 2009 by locals Joseph Keller and Dr. Bob Capps. The pair opened a kitchen in 2011 as a requirement for adding spirits to the bar menu, but when they did, they weren’t fooling around. The kitchen staff, which includes Keller’s brother, Nick Walluck, has a say in all the restaurant offerings and, while we’re comparing burgers here, you really can’t go wrong with anything on the London’s menu.
“We try to cook food like we’re cooking for family,” Walluck said. It shows. Even the desserts are homemade by Keller’s mother, Susan Walluck.
London’s is open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day at 101 N. Wall St. in Tullahoma. Look for new rotating specialties like the California Burger, served with guacamole, as London’s begins featuring a Burger of the Month.
