After falling in its first two games of the Mountain Valley Classic on Friday, Tullahoma dropped its final two contests at the tournament held at Grundy County High School on Saturday.
The Wildcats led 2-1 over Chattanooga Christian School, but lost a 3-2 matchup before falling to Grundy County 6-4. Tullahoma (10-12, 3-5) is currently riding a six-game losing streak dating back to 3-1 loss at Franklin County on April 11.
Returning to District 8-AAA play on Tuesday, the Wildcats were slated to open a series at home against Columbia Central. As of press time, the result of that contest was unavailable.
Tullahoma is slated to travel to Columbia on Wednesday to wrap up the series. First pitch is slated to take place at 6 p.m.
On Saturday against Chattanooga Christian, the Wildcats plated the opening run of the game in the top of the first inning. Chase Dixon reached base on a one-out infield single before Levi Turner followed with a line drive base hit to right field. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch and Dixon scored when David Gagnier grounded into a fielder’s choice.
The Chargers evened the score at 1 with a run, getting on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Amos Davenport reached on a one-out hit, legging out a bunt single. Justin Wheeler followed with a deep fly ball to left field and Davenport was able to tag up and take second base. Davenport later scored on an error by Tullahoma in the inning.
Matthew Meadows plated the second run of the contest for the Wildcats as they reclaimed the edge, taking a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Austin Mullins got on base with a one-out double to left field as Meadows came in as the courtesy runner. After Kaleb Stroop singled on a line drive to left field, Dalton Jones followed with a double to left field as Meadows scored.
Tullahoma held on to that lead until the bottom of the seventh, as the Chargers tied the contest, sending the ballgame into extra innings. Nathanael Kapp led off the inning with a double before Weston Gilbert lined a single into center field, tying the ballgame at 2.
Gagnier reached base on a one-out single in the top of the eighth inning for Tullahoma before Briasen Corn came in as the courtesy runner. Corn stole second base, but the Wildcats couldn’t plate him as he was stranded there.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, John Rhodes lined a triple into center field for Chattanooga Christian. Chris King followed with a base hit to left field as Rhodes raced home, scoring the game-winning walk-off run.
Mullins got the start for Tullahoma, tossing seven innings for the Wildcats. Mullins allowed two runs, one earned, seven hits and two walks while striking out three batters.
Jason Spry took the loss for the Wildcats, giving up a run and two hits in the bottom of the eighth inning.
