You may have heard the work branding thrown around a lot and how you need to brand your business. Branding often is confused with logo design, web design or even your business card design. But these things by themselves and even collectively is not a brand. While they play a role inside your brand, they cannot effectively and solely carry out a good brand. So what exactly is branding? According to Oliver and Company “Brand is a perception in the mind of your audiences. It’s an idea. It’s what people think and feel when they consider your product, your mission, your customer experience—all the components that make up your company or organization.” Jeff Bezos puts it simply as “Branding is what people say about you when you’re not around.” Branding tells people what you believe, what you stand for and who you are as a business. We all know that word of mouth is the best way to drive business. We will trust a friends word over an ad all day. Branding is used to reenforce what your friends are already saying. Branding is all about communication, either physical or digital, visual imagery or text, and like all communication it needs to be consistent across platforms. Building a brand can seem like a daunting task, but taking it one step at a time you will start seeing your brand emerge and really stand for who you are. I believe the first and best step to starting is finding out who you are as a business and why you do what you do. Take that idea and put it into words. Then share it and find like minded individuals who will believe in what you do.
