Some of Tullahoma City Schools’ brightest students were honored for their mathematical skills during a recent board of education meeting.
According to Tullahoma High School math teacher Frank Vanzant, seven Tullahoma students finished in the top 10 in the state after competing in the annual Tennessee Math Teachers’ Association (TMTA) contest this past spring.
The organization recently announced the rankings.
“It is with great pride that I announce that seven students are in the top 10 statewide,” Vanzant said. “Our goal is to have at least one student place in the top 10.”
The seven are Kathryn Brosemer, Dryden Young, Hollis Bui, Clay Daniel, Ricky Nelson, Adam Daniel and Elliot Emadian.
Vanzant said the TMTA contest consists of a single test taken by students at regional testing centers across the state.
The Tullahoma team took the test at Middle Tennessee State University last April and when all the scores were tallied, Tullahoma had more top-ranking students than any other district in the state.

“We’ve become the ‘scourge’ of the region,” Vanzant said, adding that local students have dominated the competition at MTSU for several years.
“They don’t like to see us coming. Our students do exceptionally well at the regional competition.”
Kathryn Brosemer, who was an East Middle School student during the 2012-13 school year, finished ninth in the algebra I competition. Kathryn has since moved to Smyrna with her family.
Dryden Young was ranked seventh statewide on the algebra 2 test. Three 2013 THS graduates — Hollis Bui, Clay Daniel and Ricky Nelson — also earned seventh-place honors on the calculus and advanced topics test.
Tullahoma also had two first-place winners in the competition, with Adam Daniel taking the top spot in the pre-calculus test while Elliot Emadian’s perfect score of 200 clinched top honors on the calculus and advanced topics test.
