Ophthalmologist Benyamin Ebrahim, M.D., has joined the staff at Mahan & Ridley Eye Associates, 926 N. Jackson St., a Harton Regional Medical Center affiliated partner.
Ebrahim is a graduate of the Rutgers University Robert Wood Johnson Medical School short track medical program with the University of Medicine of New Jersey. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at Georgetown University and completed his Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery fellowship at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
Born a Coptic Christian in Egypt, Ebrahim said “things were hard for my parents there.” His family moved to the United States when he was a sophomore in high school.
The large Coptic communities in Nashville and Murfreesboro drew Ebrahim to this area after he met his wife, Erini, at a local church while doing research at Vanderbilt in 2004.
The couple now has a three-year-old daughter, Elora.
“For ophthalmology it’s a really exciting time,” said Ebrahim. “Cornea (treatment) has evolved significantly in the last couple of years with new techniques and transplants that can be done.”
Ebrahim says he is “pretty much the only cornea person in the Southern Middle Tennessee area, outside of Nashville.”
One new procedure Mahan & Ridley has begun performing since Ebrahim’s addition in July is laser-assisted cataract surgery.
“That’s one of those new technologies that we’re all excited about.”
