DA suspects there are more victims
A former Westwood Junior High School band and chorus director was charged with one count of aggravated sexual battery against a 12-year-old, a Class B felony.
Thomas Evans Baird, 79, was indicted by the Coffee County grand jury and appeared in court on Wednesday, Nov. 28. He posted his $10,000 bond, according to District Attorney Craig Northcott.
Coffee County General Sessions Court Judge Jere Ledsinger added a bond condition, at Northcott’s request, that disallows Baird from being in contact with anyone under 18 years old.
“We can’t get into a lot of the details of the case ethically. I am allowed to state that we suspect there are many other victims. I am concerned for their well-being,” Northcott said.
Northcutt asked for anyone who was assaulted by Baird, or anyone with information on other incidents, to contact his office or the police department.
Northcott added the alleged assault covered by the indictment happened recently.
Baird will appear in court again on Jan. 3.
Baird was Westwood Junior High School’s band director for 30 years. He is the vice chairman of the Manchester Historical Zoning Society and is a member of the Manchester Steering Commission.
