A construction project delay has led to the Tullahoma City Schools Board of Education to amend its 2019-2020 budget after finalizing it in June.

According to discussion at the Aug. 19 school board meeting, the drainage updates to Bel-Aire Elementary School ran longer than anticipated, causing the project to be completed after the 2019-2020 school year began.

The project addressed drainage issues tied to a decades-old sump pump in the basement at Bel-Aire.

Because the project was slightly delayed, the $342,700 project budget was rolled over from the 2018-2019 budget where it was previously allocated.

Because the school system is a facet of the city government, this will force the Tullahoma Board of Mayor and Aldermen to vote on a budget amendment for the city.

The amendment was passed unanimously by the school board.

The change is not expected to alter any city funds. It is instead only a clerical clarification for reporting purposes.

The city board is expected to address the issue at its next meeting on Monday, Sept. 9.
