Four goals were put up in what turned out to be an exciting intrasquad matchup, as the Tullahoma High School girls soccer team played its annual Red vs. White Contest at East Middle School on Thursday.

After trailing 1-0 early in the ballgame, the Red Team who garnered bragging rights this year, scoring three unanswered goals on the way to notching the 3-1 victory. Rachel Johnson, Erin Douglas and Paisley Simmons each netted a score for the Red Squad, while Maridith Fogle put up the lone goal for the White Team.

Early on in Thursday’s scrimmage, the White team who dominated ball possession, particularly in the first 10 minutes, which lead to an early score. With just over 31 minutes left in the first half, Fogle connected for her score. After an initial shot by the White Squad went wide, Fogle was there to grab possession, firing off a shot that found the back of the net, giving her team a 1-0 lead.

The White Team continued to apply plenty of pressure, keeping the Red Squad’s goalkeeper Elizabeth Johnson plenty busy. However, Elizabeth made numerous saves in her performance, including a leaping save midway through the first half and a pair of diving saves later in the period.

Momentum shifted in the final 15 minutes of the opening half, as the Red Team began to garner possession, leading to a goal with just under 13 minutes left before halftime. After grabbing ball possession, the White Squad’s goalkeeper Trinity Tennant went to kick the ball. However, the ball deflected off a teammate on the left side of the field, bouncing back toward the middle of the box.

Rachel was waiting right there for the Red Team and was able to pounce. Once getting possession, Rachel fired off a shot that Tennant couldn’t get in front of, evening the score at 1.

Both teams split possession in the second half, each having early opportunities to grab the advantage. With 16:41 remaining in the contest, Douglas capitalized on her chance, giving the Red Team a 2-1 advantage.

After getting possession down low, the Red Squad fired off three shots, two of which were deflected by Tennant, and another by a teammate. However, on the final attempt, the ball went over to the left side of the field, finding Douglas, who was unguarded and she capitalized, putting the ball into the back of the net.

Five minutes later, Simmons padded her team’s advantage, putting the Red Team in front 3-1. After gaining possession, Simmons capitalized on her chance, finding the right side of the net.

With the intrasquad matchup in the books, the Lady Wildcats will continue their preseason on Saturday, heading to Manchester to take part in a play day. As of press time, the results from those games were unavailable.

Following that, the Lady Wildcats will host a pair of home scrimmages. Tullahoma will first take on Franklin County on Tuesday. The junior varsity will begin play at 5 p.m., with the varsity contest taking place at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, the Lady Wildcats will welcome Riverdale to the field at East Middle School. Like Tuesday, the junior varsity will take the field at 5 p.m., with the varsity contest starts at 7 p.m.
