Middle School racers Grant Fogle and Jordyn Spry earned berths into the Knoxville Youth Athletics Cross-Country State Meet based on their performances during the state qualifier in Chattanooga on Saturday.
In order to qualify for state, racers had to finish inside the top 20 of their respective races during the Knoxville Youth Athletics Chattanooga Cross-Country State Qualifier on Saturday. Spry placed 18th on the day, while Fogle placed 19th in the run.
The Knoxville Youth Athletics State Meet will take place in Knoxville on Saturday at Victor Ashe Park. Start time of the girls race is slated for 1 p.m. with the boys slated to follow at 1:40 p.m.
During her 2-mile run, Spry finished with a time of 15 minutes and 41.48 seconds. There were 42 total runners during the girls qualifier in Chattanooga.
Mae Mae Powe from St. Jude took first place overall in the girls race at 12:35.82. Teammates Hannah Faudi and Lily Dodd from CSTHEA Patriots (homeschool) placed second and third, respectively, rounding out the top three runners. Faudi placed second at 12:29.98, while Dodd finished at 13:01.70.
On the boys side, Fogle finished his 2-mile run with a time of 13:03.13. There were 90 total runners during the boys qualifier in Chattanooga.
Cory Mattos of CSTHEA finished first by clocking in at 11:47.13. McCallie teammates Lawson Parsley and Stoney Winfield placed second and third, respectively. Parsley finished with a time of 11:50.60, while Winfield clocked in at 12:05.68.
As a team, the Tullahoma Middle School girls finished fourth overall during the Chattanooga race with 99 points. CSTHEA took first in the team standings with 15 points, while Chattanooga Christian placed second at 49 points and Girls Preparatory Academy took third at 91.
After Spry had her 18th-place finish for the TMS girls team, Lexi Lester followed in 22nd at 16:11.51. Bella Rivera took 29th at 17:06.75. Zoe Barnett placed 30th at 17:21.90, while Brooklyn Hampton rounded out the TMS runners at 41 with a time of 19:46.21.
Tullahoma had just one more boy compete after Fogle finished 19th overall. Jacob Hall was the final TMS runner, finishing 46th with a time of 14:46.06.
The Tullahoma High School cross-country teams also competed on Saturday, traveling to Dickson to compete in the MSCCA Championships at Buckner City Park.
On the boys side, Tullahoma was led by Matt Qua, who finished 53rd with a time of 19:49.63. Brandon Cluckey took 67th at 21:10.07. Aiden Wagner finished 83rd at 22:09.09. Spencer Yoder placed 90th at 22:40.07, while Justin Lemons rounded out the Wildcat runners in 101st at 23:16.78.
On the girls side, Tullahoma had just a pair of runners. Katharine Hills led the Lady Wildcats by finishing 22nd at 22:47.79, while Iskadar Dohrmann placed 73rd at 27:58.38.
Prior to that race, the THS boys team put together a third-place effort at the Columbia Invitational on Sept. 22. The Wildcats finished with 72 points, behind first-place Stewarts Creek who finished with 24 points and second-place Grace Christian Academy who had 39 points.
Matt Qua led the THS boys racers with a time of 22:48.23, finishing 17th overall. Andrew Brown took 19th at 23:10. Grant King placed 27th at 24:21.63. Aiden Wagner finished 36th at 26.15.11, while Justin Lemons took 39th at 30:03.09.
On the girls side, Hills took second for the Lady Wildcats, clocking in at 25:11.85. Dohrmann finished 15th at 33:46.94.
Both the TMS and THS teams then competed in the Henry Horton Invitational in Lewisburg on Sept. 29. The TMS girls team took second place with a total of 40 points, just behind first-place finisher Oakland, who had 38 points.
Spry led the TMS girls team with a fourth-place effort, finishing with a time of 14:10. Lester finished seventh at 14:28. MaMa Jenkins took eighth at 14:53. Rivera finished in ninth at 14:54. Barnett clocked in at 15:20 placing 12th, while Hampton rounded out the local runners in 21st at 18:09.
Fogle led the TMS boys with a fourth-place finish at 12:12. Jacob Hall took 10th at 13:10.
Qua led the THS boys runners, taking 36th with a time of 19:32. Cluckey took 52nd at 20:20. Wagner placed 89th at 22:12, while Lemons finished 109th at 23:59.
Hills finished eighth for the THS girls, clocking in at 22:39. Dohrmann finished 55th at 28:33.
The Tullahoma High School teams will compete again at the TSSAA Regional in Columbia on Oct. 25. As of press time, start time for that race had yet to be announced.
