Shovels dig out of losing streak

Three more games were played in the Tullahoma Adult Baseball League on Monday, Aug. 4. Here is a recap and the results from the three games.

Shebvul Shovels vs Outlaws

The Shebvul Shovels got back in the winning circle on Monday, with a 7-0 victory over the Outlaws.

Early in the season, the Shovels looked like the team to beat in the entirety of the Tullahoma league. To start the year, they went 5-0 and stood at the top of the standings. Unfortunately, however, over the past couple of weeks, they hit a rough patch and rattled off three losses in a row. A common theme in that stretch of defeats was pitching. In all three losses, the Shovels allowed six runs. In three of the Shovels’ four wins before Monday night’s game, they held teams to two runs or fewer. They got back to this winning formula against the Outlaws.

Pitcher for the Shovels, Jayden Fellers was the star in the bullpen for his team in a shutout, no-hit win. He had seven strikeouts through three innings.

The stars on offense for the Shovels in this win were Blake Bone and Jacob Price. Price went 1-1 with two RBIs and one walk.  Bone went 1-2, with two runs and one walk.

The Shovels after the contest are now 5-3, and the Outlaws are now 0-7.

Stache vs Reds

The Stache, like the Shovels, also grabbed a shutout win, beating the Reds 3-0.

The Stache are on the largest current win streak in the league, winning six games in a row. Their pitching from Layne Roberts was the primary reason for their latest of the six wins. He pitched all seven innings for the Stache against the Reds. Through those 21 outs he had 10 strikeouts and allowed only two hits. On offense for the Stache, they got their production in the second and third innings.

In the second inning, the Stache secured the first run of the game. This came from a solo shot home run off the bat of Dylan Ward. In the third inning, the Stache scored their two other runs of the game. They were able to capitalize on some errors made by the Outlaws early in the frame. This was a hit by pitch and an error that put two Stache players on base with one out in the inning. Lee Carden then hit a fly ball that found grass to right field to score the two players.

The Stache with the win are now 5-3 on the season, while the Reds drop their second game in a row and are also 5-3 now on the season.

Piñatas vs Royals

The Piñatas continue to climb the ranks. They added their fifth win in a row with a 5-2 win over the Royals.

In this contest, the Piñatas established an early lead in the bottom of the first. Their first three batters reached base on a walk, a single, and a hit by pitch. JD Parker was able to score in two of the three players with a ground ball two RBI out. Later in the inning, with two outs, AJ Parker was able to secure a 3-0 lead on an RBI single to right field.

Scoring came to a halt for both teams until the top of the fourth, where the Royals started to fight back. They cut back into the Piñatas’ lead, scoring one run in the top of the fourth. This came from Blake Hollis stealing home. In the top of the fifth, the Royals made it a one-run game at 3-2, but the Piñatas then put this comeback to rest in the bottom of the fifth. They scored two runs in the inning from an RBI double from Josh Nave and an RBI groundout from Ryan Emerson.

The Piñatas are now joined by two other teams, improving to a 5-3 record, while the Royals are now 4-4 on the season.
