Decherd extends 40 mph speed zone
The current 40 mph speed limit on Highway 127 has been adjusted from Interstate Block to Henley Construction. New speed limit signs have been posted as of this week. The area highlighted in yellow in the accompanying picture is the current 40 mph zone. The area highlighted in red/orange is the addition to the 40 mph zone.
Why is the speed limit being changed?
1. Reducing Crashes: Studies show this stretch has experienced a higher-than-average crash rate. Lowering speeds is proven to reduce both the frequency and severity of accidents.
2. Managing Traffic Flow: As traffic volume increases, adjusted limits help maintain a smoother, safer flow.
3. Supporting Ongoing Development: With new residential and commercial projects underway, roads require updated speed standards to accommodate changes in traffic density.
4. Protecting Our School Zone: A nearby school zone is especially sensitive—slower speeds mean greater safety for students and families during school hours.
There will be a 30-day grace period where drivers will be only given warnings. During this 30-day grace period, drivers will receive warnings, not citations, as long as the violation does not exceed the previous speed limit. This will allow everyone time to adjust to the changes.
On Aug. 1, law enforcement officers can begin issuing citations for speed violations under the new limits.
