Three more games of the Tullahoma adult baseball league were played on July 24. Here are the results.
Shebvul Shovels vs Reds
The Reds survived a late rally scare against the Shebvul Shovels, winning last Thursday’s contest 6-5. After a slow start for both teams, combining for zero runs through the first three and a half innings, the Reds lit up the scoreboard in the bottom of the third.
They scored a total of six runs in the frame. Gage Burt got the party started with a two-run homer to right field. After a single and a walk by Cody Stephens and Tyler Wright, Brandon Ness stepped up to the plate for the Reds. He worked a full count with the third-pitched ball in the at bat, advancing both the runners into scoring position at second and third. Stephens, on the deciding pitch of the duel between him and Shovels’ pitcher Jacob Hawkings, smacked a line drive to center field. His hit found a patch of grass and scored in both Reds’ runners, giving them a 4-0 lead with a two run RBI double. Chris Martin later walked up to the plate for the Reds with two outs and drilled a line drive homer to right field to make it a 6-0 game.
The Reds have been playing great ball lately, winning two of their last three games, so a comeback felt unlikely for the Shovels. But they showed that they were not going down easily.
In the last inning of the game, the Shovels fought back and made it a 6-4 game with two outs. Hawkins stepped to the plate and managed a 1-2 count. Reds pitcher Burt threw a wild pitch, which allowed a Shovels player to slide in and score at home plate to bring the score to a one-run game at 6-5. Unfortunately for the Shovels, Burt brushed off his last pitch and locked back in. He delivered a great pitch, and Hawkings swung and missed, ending the game and the late rally from the Shovels.
The Reds improved to a record of 4-1 after the game, while the Shovels got their first loss of the season and now have a record of 4-1 as well.
Royals vs Outlaws
The Royals put up a dominant performance, beating the Outlaws 16-0. The Royals, in the four innings played between them and the Outlaws, scored at least two runs in every inning. They expanded the gap of the game, especially in the first and third innings. In the first inning, they put up five runs, and in the third, they put up seven.
The Royals on the day had a total of 14 hits with six players on the team each getting two hits–Terrin Maupin, Corey Mullins, Blake Hillis, Cade Quick, Jim Webster. This was the most hits the Royals have gotten in a game all year. They improved their record to 3-2, while the Outlaws are still in search of their first win of the season, sitting at the bottom at 0-5.
Stache vs Athletics
The Stache snuck out and secured a win against the Athletics, winning 7-5. Trailing 5-4, going to the Stache’s last three outs of the contest in the fifth inning, they were able to tie the game. With one out left, the Stache had two players on the base paths. They initiated a double steal, taking both second and third. Setting up for any ball that was put in play, likely would score a run. And that is exactly what Stache player Jax King provided. He struck a ground ball to first, tied the game, and allowed his team to see another inning.
Both teams went scoreless in the first extra inning in the sixth, but in the seventh, the Stache got on the scoreboard. Jackson Irwin hit a pop fly to center field that resulted in an error. This scored two runs for the Stache and ended up giving them the win. The Stache have not lost since losing their first two games of the season and are now in third place on the rankings with a record of 4-2. The Athletics, after the tough loss, now have a record of 1-4.
