David Hess took to social media on Feb. 27 to announce that his last PET scan showed no signs of cancer.
“The devil can scrap but the lord has won,” said Hess on his X social media account.
“We got scan results showing no evidence of disease and for the first time since this whole journey started we can officially say currently I’m cancer-free!”
The former Tullahoma native was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2015 in the fifth round, after a stellar junior season with the Tennessee Golden Eagle. Hess made his way through the farm system of the Orioles and eventually debuted for Baltimore in 2018. He then pitched for the Orioles and a couple other big league squads up until October of 2021 where his pro pitching career and life were put on hold when a tumor was found in his chest.
He was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive chest cancer called angiosarcoma. Hess then went through chemotherapy upon the diagnosis, and eventually was labeled as cancer-free and returned to play in minor league baseball in 2022 where the unfortunate news then broke again that the cancer had come back.
He then geared up for another battle with cancer.
After finishing another round of chemo Hess underwent a CT scan with contrast to see how his body responded from the time removed from treatment after finishing chemo. The scan showed that he had no lung nodules and that his chest was stable. This scan officially set him up for his PET scan and gave the great news that the former THS Wildcat is officially cancer-free.
“Look at what God can do,” Hess said.
