Purebreds are not pure
The American Kennel Club (AKC) released its latest list of the most common dog breeds—but this is nothing to celebrate.
“Purebreds” are inbred and bred for exaggerated physical features that can cause a lifetime of misery. Topping the list, French bulldogs are prone to a disorder known as brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, which leaves them coughing, wheezing, and struggling just to breathe. Also making the list are dachshunds, who often face debilitating back problems, skin conditions, diabetes, and other ailments. The AKC’s standard for another breed, the cane corso, allows for ear cropping and tail docking—painful, unnecessary mutilations that are banned in many countries.
What’s more, AKC rankings fuel fads that perpetuate puppy mills and breeders. In turn, the out-of-control animal overpopulation crisis grows, because every animal they sell represents one less potential home for one of the millions of animals who already exist.
“Popularity” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Please adopt from a shelter instead of supporting an industry steeped in greed and suffering. And always spay and neuter your animal companions.
