TSSAA relaxes transfer rule

The TSSAA Board of Control met this past week and took some action on the state’s transfer rule, somewhat relaxing it in some areas.

The TSSSAA board of control approved the following addition to Article II Section 13 (“Eligible Transfer Students.”):

“The first time the student transfers to another school due to a significant academic, social-emotional, environmental or mental health need. The sending school’s administration must attest that the move is not for athletic or disciplinary reasons. The Council asked the staff to come back on April 8 with implementation procedures and timelines for providing verification.”

They also declared that there will be no athletic eligibility for an international student who has completed the secondary school requirements in his/her country of origin.

Tabled any further action on the residency rule until the April meeting. Options may include, but will not be limited to the following: a. Eliminate the provision which requires new students to live with a parent or guardian (person with whom a student has lived for the last twelve months) for all students. b. Eliminate boarding school exception for incoming seniors. c. Eliminate boarding school exception for incoming juniors from with Tennessee. 4. Discussed the eligibility of students who are otherwise eligible under Article II Section 13 but have transferred after the TSSAA First Contest Date. The staff will gather information from other states regarding restrictions on the students who transfer after the TSSAA first contest date.

Along with addressing residency, the board gave the TSSAA a new look with a new logo to celebrate the organizations centennial year.

The Board voted to elect Grant Swallows as President and Bryan True as Vice-President.

A new logo for the association was approved by the Board of Control.

The color scheme of the logo mimics the Tennessee flag. The three stars in the “SS” mimic the exact shape of the Tennessee flag and the slants in the “T” and “AA” represent the shape of Tennessee. The version of the logo that will be used during 2025 will commemorate the association’s centennial celebration.

Red Bank High School appealed a previous decision to uphold the football contract between Red Bank High School and Cleveland High School that required Red Bank to pay $5,000 in restitution to Cleveland for the cancelled football contest scheduled on September 27, 2024. The Board denied Red Bank’s appeal.

The Board approved a recommendation that three officials be assigned for regional and sectional softball contests, provided that the local association has enough officials to work the contests.

Nashville Collegiate Prep was approved for membership beginning with the 2025-26 school year.

Financial reports for the State Bowling Tournament and Hall of Champions games were reviewed as well as the 2024 BlueCross Bowl team allotment report.
