Flashback – Tullahoma’s Entrepreneurial Spirit

A

Somewhat continuing with last week’s theme, here are some more views of Tullahoma’s businesses from past days. These, however, are all locally owned businesses, plus a couple of views of the smallest of small businesses, a flea market. Unfortunately, most of Tullahoma’s privately owned businesses have vanished, and with them part of the joy of buying locally from neighbors. A few still exist and we will feature them in future articles.

This particular flea market was held at the old Arnold Drive-In, which was located at the northwest corner of Highway 55 (New Manchester Highway) and Cobb Road. It’s now the location of the Pepsi Beverage Company’s distribution facility. Interestingly, looking at an aerial view of that site on Google Earth, the remains of the arcs of the drive-in’s rows facing toward the screen are still slightly visible. As can be seen in one of these accompanying photos, the screen was in the southwest corner of the property. It’s possible that the current Pepsi and Mountain Dew sign sits on the same posts as the old Arnold Drive-In sign.

As you see these photos and they bring back memories, tell us about them on the Tullahoma News Facebook page. Or if they send you to the family photo albums looking at other businesses, reach out to me at alanmayes@lighttube.net. As last week, known addresses in the captions are from the 1967 Con Survey City Directory, kindly loaned by Roland Segroves.
