Spring forward this Sunday
Daylight Savings Time comes back this Sunday, as the area will “spring forward” at 2 a.m. March 9.
With the exception of Hawaii and most of Arizona, all of the United States springs forward in March and falls back an hour in November. This year Daylight Savings Time will remain in effect until Nov. 2.
As a result of the adjustment Sunday morning, sunrise and sunset will be about one hour later on March 9 than on March 8. This means there will be more light in the evening and less light in the morning.
Daylight Saving Time began as an energy-saving measure in World War I and World War II. It took its current seasonal form in the mid-1970s, following the 1973 oil embargo.
Those who do not like the change have questioned whether the time change saves energy and say it messes up sleep schedules with harmful impacts, with research showing a corresponding drop in productivity and an increase in car crashes.
