GameStop closes Manchester location

KYLE MURPHYStaff Writer

The start of the year has not been kind for several retailers, and that includes GameStop who just closed over 400 stores in January, including the Manchester location.

While the corporation has not issued a statement regarding the closures, the newest round of stores to close follows a trend for the struggling video game retailer. Due to sales declining over the years has led to hundreds of locations closing, including 216 stores closing in 2024.

According to an unofficial blog that follows GameStop stores in the U.S. via GameStop’s website, 401 stores closed in January, which the writer noted was the largest amount of stores to close in a month to date, in nearly all 50 states. For Tennessee, 12 GameStop locations had the power unplugged from their stores, which included the Manchester GameStop at 2532 Hillsboro Blvd.

The Manchester GameStop has been a mainstay in the Shops of Manchester mini-mall in front of the Manchester Walmart for about two decades, as it was one of its first tenants to move in back in late 2004. It would stay at the location until its closure.

A GameStop representative stated the store was permanently closed, and they would have no further information about the closure of that particular store.

In the meantime, anyone looking to find a video game retailer can stop by Game X Change in Tullahoma, located at the Cherokee Square Shopping Center at 1802 N Jackson St.
