Forgotten Luxuries
K
“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much” Luke 16:10. This verse is one you may have heard many times in your life, but have you taken time to truly ponder the message of the text? This past week we each became witness to a landscape covered in beautiful white snow, but was it beautiful to everyone? The freezing temperatures and inconvenience of snow-covered roads were not a blessing to those whose homes had no heat or to those who had to work tirelessly to protect the members of our community.
The snow was only beautiful to those who had “forgotten luxuries”. You know, those who had food in the pantry, warmth in their homes, coats for their children, vacation days to spend – the basic luxuries that should all make us stop with gratitude and overflow with a desire to help others along the way. When you begin to draw closer to God you will notice that your heart begins to break for those things that break His. The snow out the window becomes painful to see when you know there are others suffering because of it. It is in the little things that God tests your faith, obedience and character. Will you give your 10% when you want a new pair of shoes? Will you appreciate the small things in life when others seem to have more? Are you able to be trusted with the seeds God has handed you to sow and multiply? There are so many things in our lives that can seem so insignificant until they are no longer there. This particular verse caused me to ponder on the incredible opportunity we have each day to study and read the Bible. We may not see our Bibles as a luxury, but oh what an invaluable weapon we have in those black, white and red letters.
Maybe your Bible is on your bedside table or maybe it’s tucked under the bed – no matter how close or far away, the treasure is still yours. Just like the snow out the window, your journey through Christ is only as beautiful as you see it. The luxury we have to share the Good News with others through warm hugs, a hot coffee and even a bright smile makes you rich beyond measure. We as a body of Christ should strive each day to bring joy in sorrow and love in pain even when we ourselves are suffering and enduring darkness.
Our relationship with the Father grows through our faith, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 and obedience to act even in days of small. Don’t allow the enemy to make you believe your faith is not enough – it moves mountains, it calls miracles, and it rebukes evil through the name of Jesus. Look around my friend…as we have seen over the last week across this country, it’s not the material things that matter in this lifetime. It’s the forgotten luxuries of peace, calm, stillness, joy, gratitude, humbleness, love and faith that produce the jewels in our crowns. As the snow melts and life resumes – think of it as a fresh anointing on your community as we prepare to sow the little in hopes of harvesting the much.
“But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.” Matthew 23:11-12.
