LouAnn Segrest Mitchell, Obituary
LouAnn Segrest Mitchell, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and dedicated educator, passed away peacefully on Sept. 23, 2024 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Born on Oct. 17, 1931, in Luverne, Ala., she was the cherished daughter of BrithaeLou and Lewis Segrest.
LouAnn’s life was marked by her commitment to education and community service. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics from Auburn University in 1954 and later pursued a Master’s in Speech Pathology from Peabody College, Vanderbilt, in 1971. Her passion for helping others led her to a fulfilling career as a Speech and Hearing Therapist with the Tullahoma Coffee County School system, where she touched the lives of countless young students from 1972 to 1987.
In 1953, LouAnn married James Guy Mitchell, also of Luverne, Ala. Their marriage spanned 70 years, a testament to their enduring love and partnership. Together, they moved to Tullahoma in 1958, where LouAnn became an active member of the community. She was a dedicated committee chairperson at Tullahoma First Methodist Church and participated in the Tullahoma Garden Club and various civic organizations.
LouAnn had a passion for antiques, which she enjoyed collecting and selling, and she cherished the friendships she cultivated over the decades. Her warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Mitchell, and their son, James G. Mitchell Jr. LouAnn is survived by her son Jeffrey Lewis Mitchell, his wife Carolyn, and her grandchildren, Samuel James Mitchell, and Sarah Mitchell Thompson, who is married to Lawrence Paul Thompson.
LouAnn’s legacy of love, service and dedication will be fondly remembered by her family and friends.
