Forgotten county resolutions set term limits and rural road speed limits

Coffee County Mayor Dennis Hunt brought to light during the Nov. 12 Coffee County Commission meeting two Coffee County Resolutions that date back to the 1980s that are not currently being enforced.

One resolution from 1981 sets a two term, or eight-year limit, on non-commissioner held boards. These could include citizen volunteers on the Coffee County Planning Commission, Ambulance Authority and the Board of Zoning Appeals.

The resolution allows for reappointment after one term of inactivity.

The other resolution, from 1991, sets a speed limit on all rural county roads for trucks over 4,000 lbs. at 35 miles per hour.

These two resolutions were largely unknown among officials and unenforced.

Hunt said that he intends to present the resolutions to the Legislative Committee to then be presented to the full legislative body for conformation or rescission.

Rural road speed limits are a topic regularly brought to members of the commission from concerned citizens. Current enforcement on county road sets a general speed limit of 55 mph unless posted otherwise.

Hunt said that most trucks on the road are over 4,000 lbs.
