The Tennessee Urban Forestry Council (TUFC) has recognized two outstanding arborists from Tullahoma for their exceptional contributions to urban forestry and community sustainability.

Lyle Russell, Community Engagement Officer and Arborist for the City of Tullahoma, has been named the 2024 Government Employee of the Year, while Monty Hawkins, Utility Arborist for the Tullahoma Utilities Authority (TUA), has been honored as the 2024 Private Professional of the Year. These prestigious awards celebrate the dedication, expertise, and innovation demonstrated by urban forestry professionals across Tennessee.

Monty Hawkins: Private Professional of the Year

Hawkins, serving as the Utility Arborist for TUA, has been instrumental in implementing innovative strategies to balance utility maintenance with urban forestry preservation. His expertise in managing tree-related utility challenges, while prioritizing tree health, has set a standard of excellence for the industry.

“Monty’s dedication to preserving Tullahoma’s urban canopy while ensuring the reliability of our utility services is truly remarkable. His efforts not only enhance the beauty of our community but also reflect TUA’s commitment to sustainability and innovation,” said TUA President Allen Potter. “We couldn’t be prouder to see Monty’s hard work and passion recognized with this award.”

Lyle Russell: Government Employee of the Year

As the Arborist for the City of Tullahoma, Lyle Russell has led initiatives to enhance the city’s green spaces, improve tree health, and engage the community in sustainable urban forestry practices. His leadership in planting and maintaining native tree species has significantly contributed to the city’s ecological health and aesthetic appeal.

“Lyle’s work has made Tullahoma a greener, healthier, and more beautiful place to live,” said J.P. Kraft, Director of Tullahoma Parks who nominated Russell. “His commitment to protecting our urban canopy and educating the public on its importance is truly inspiring.”

“Sustaining a healthy urban forestry plan is one aspect of Tullahoma that makes us who we are today,” City Administrator Jason Quick said. “As Tullahoma continues to see growth over the next several years, it is critically important that a balance of preservation vs. progress is maintained. Lyle Russell has been an effective advocate in making sure this balance remains at the forefront of our planning. The rest of the state of Tennessee now realizes what an asset we have in Lyle.”

The awards were presented during the TUFC Annual Awards Ceremony, held at the Scarritt Bennett Center on the Vanderbilt University campus in Nashville on Nov. 14, where both recipients were praised by colleagues and other forestry professionals for their significant achievements and contributions to urban forestry. The City of Tullahoma and TUA are proud to celebrate these distinguished professionals who exemplify excellence in urban forestry and community service.
