Coffee Cares, a nonprofit organization that provides support to individuals and families burdened by the costs of medical treatment, held the second annual Coffee Care Golf Tournament Monday, Sept. 9 at WillowBrook Golf Club.

“There’s a lot of people who can’t afford to pay for medical care here in Coffee County,” Coffee Cares President Anjali Mukherjai Doria said.

“It’s important to all our board members to make sure healthcare is available to everybody in our county and that nobody is worrying about how they are going to afford how to live their own life and have good healthcare.”

The tournament, a four-person scramble, was made possible by presenting sponsors Unity Medical Center, JAVA Medicine, Rural Health Consultant, Dava Health Nonprofit and TruBridge. Twenty-five teams of four attended as well as 20 other sponsors. The event garnered close to $30,000 according to Doria.

“So far we’ve been able to help 10 people completely remove their medical debt in our inaugural year,” she said.

The winner of the tournament was the Make Manchester Great Again team, made up of Craig Johnson, Braid Reed, Hayden Profit and Doug Cook.
