TUA enacts voluntary conservation measures of water usage

The Tullahoma Utilities Authority (TUA) announced Friday, Sept. 6, that it was enacting voluntary conservation measures at the request of the Duck River Agency.

“Due to ongoing drought conditions, the Duck River Agency has declared a Stage 1 river drought and is requesting that all water users take voluntary steps to reduce non-essential water usage,” TUA officials said in a statement. “As a community partner committed to environmental stewardship, TUA is encouraging its nearly 11,000 water customers in Tullahoma and surrounding areas to participate in this effort to preserve our precious water resources and protect the delicate ecosystems of the Duck River.”

Per TUA, the Duck River is home to one of North America’s most biodiverse freshwater ecosystems, supporting over 150 species of fish, more than 50 species of freshwater mussels, and numerous other aquatic organisms.

“These ecosystems depend on healthy river flow levels to survive,” officials said. “During drought conditions, reduced water flow can disrupt habitats, stress wildlife, and threaten the overall ecological balance of the river. By conserving water now, we can help mitigate these impacts and ensure the continued vitality of this unique natural resource.”

TUA listed the following non-essential water uses that should be minimized:

• Irrigation of lawns, gardens, and other outdoor areas

• Use of water for outdoor recreation

• Washing sidewalks, driveways, and other hard surfaces

• Filling or refilling pools and hot tubs

• Non-commercial vehicle and boat washing

• Dust control during construction

TUA officials said it recognized the inconvenience that conservation measures may cause.

“Still, by working together now, we can help to ensure that our water supply remains stable for essential needs and that the Duck River’s ecosystems remain protected during this period of drought. We ask all customers to join us in reducing water usage wherever possible.”

TUA thanked customers for their cooperation and commitment to the responsible use of shared water resources.
