KYLE MURPHYStaff Writer

The Highland Rim Chapter of the Compassionate Friends will host its “Walk to Remember Our Children” event Sunday, Sept. 8, at Frazier McEwen Park.

The event will be from 2-3:30 p.m. at Frazier McEwen Park, located at 216 Big Springs Ave., in the pavilion near to the baseball field behind Tullahoma High School.

The Highland Rim Chapter of the Compassionate Friends is extending the invitation to anyone who has lost a child, grandchild, or sibling to honor their loved one on the commemorative walk. The event will start with a short ceremony and then continue with the walk, which will be a loop of several blocks. Upon returning to the pavilion, a potluck lunch will be shared.

Anyone who is unable to do the walk is welcome to remain at the pavilion during the walk.

About the Compassionate Friends

The Compassionate Friends is a self-help 501(c)(3) nonprofit international organization that is open to all families that have experienced the death of a child from any cause, at any age, and helps to provide friendship, understanding and hope to families grieving the death of a child. Its mission is to assist bereaved families toward the positive resolution of grief following the death of a child and to provide information to help others be supportive.

The Highland Rim Chapter of the Compassionate Friends was established in June 1988 by Nancy Lannom, with the assistance of David Gibson from the Nashville chapter. Since its inception, the Highland Rim chapter has served families from Coffee, Franklin, Warren, Bedford, Grundy, Moore, Lincoln, and Rutherford counties. The current Chapter Leader is Helen Lankford, who has been serving since 2011.

The Highland Rim Chapter meets on the second Sunday of each month from 2-3:30 p.m. at The Church of Christ at Cedar Lane, located at 1200 Cedar Lane. This support group is a place where parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends can come to share their feelings with other parents who have also lost a child. The chapter also publishes a free monthly newsletter that contains comforting and helpful articles and ways to share the grief and recovery process during the grief journey. It is sent to all local members, as well as to many out of the area and is an important outreach to those who are unable to attend meetings.
