Tullahoma splits games at Coffee County

Tullahoma went to Coffee County Friday night and the ‘Cats picked up their second straight double-digit win, while the Lady ‘Cats had their winning streak snapped.

The Lady Wildcats were led by Nyjah Gibbs with 11 points. Isabella Lidstrom and McLayne Bobo both scored 7 points. The Lady Raiders were led by Olivia Vinson with 19 points, including 9 in the fourth quarter.

Tullahoma scored first but Coffee County held a 13-4 lead after the first quarter. Gibbs and Lily Melton scored 2 points each in the first. The Raiders got 4 points from both Jules Ferrell and Vinson.

The Lady ‘Cats were down 24-9 halfway through the second quarter before taking a 7-2 run into the break. The run cut the deficit down to 10, 26-16. Gibbs scored 4 points during the period. Bobo scored 3 points, converting an and-one. Aubrey North drained a shot from beyond the arc for her only 3 points of the game. Melton scored a bucket just like she did in the opening quarter. The Lady Raiders got 4 points from Vinson and went 6 for 8 as a team from the foul line in the quarter.

Coming out of the break, Tullahoma went on a 5-0 run to cut it to 26-21. Coffee County answered with an 8-3 run to make it 34-24 after three quarters of play. Gibbs again scored 4 points in the third to lead the ‘Cats. Lidstrom scored her first 3 points of the game with an and-one. The Lady Raiders got 3 points from Natalie Barnes and Ava McIntosh.

The Lady Wildcats were outscored 12-10 in the fourth quarter to seal their fate. The ‘Cats were down 42-29 when Lidstrom sunk a pair of free throws to make it 42-31, but the team went scoreless over the next two minutes. The score remained 42-31 with 1:30 left in the game. Coffee County put the game away from the free throw line going 4 for 4 in the fourth. Melton hit a layup to make it 47-34. Lidstrom scored 4 points in the fourth.

The Tullahoma boys’ team had a dominant second quarter, outscoring Coffee County 22-4. They took a 10-point lead into halftime and built on it to win 67-50.

The Wildcats were led by Xavier Farrell with 22 points including five makes from downtown. The Raiders were led by Jackson Shemwell with 16 points.

The game began with a 5-0 run by Farrell. Coffee County ended the run with an and-one. The Raiders closed the quarter on a 9-0 to take a 21-13 lead. Khani Johnson and Alex Bobo both hit a 3-pointer to go with Farrell’s 5 points. Malik Grizzard also made a close shot. Jaden Carter scored 8 of his 10 points in the first quarter while Brady Wright added 7 of his own.

The second quarter opened with Johnson sinking another 3. The ‘Cats went on a 10-2 run in the first four minutes of the quarter. Tullahoma closed the half with a 12-0 run over the last 2:30. Farrell hit two 3-pointers in the second. DeAndre Jenkins and Keegan Taylor hit one each. Bryson Steverson scored all 4 of his points in the second. Cooper Reed and Shemwell scored the 4 points for Coffee County.

Austin Tinnon scored after a post spin to open the scoring in the second half. The Wildcats outscored the Raiders 21-15 in the third quarter to take a 56-40 lead. Grizzard was fouled on a buzzer beater attempt. He went to the foul line and made all three shots. Jenkins and Taylor led the ‘Cats with 4 points each in the third. Bobo and Farrell both made a 3 while Jaiden Sanchez scored 2 points. Shemwell scored 7 for the Raiders.

Farrell opened the fourth scoring the first 4 points. He sunk a 3 halfway through the quarter to make it 66-46. He added a free throw later to give Tullahoma their last point of the game. Jenkins score the other 3 points for the Wildcats with a make from long range. Shemwell gave Coffee County another 5 points in the final quarter.

The Wildcats hit 12 3-pointers as a team and went 10-of-18 from the foul line. The Raiders hit four 3s and went 8 for 15 on free throws.

Tullahoma’s next game is Friday when they travel to Lincoln County. The girls’ varsity game will tipoff at 6 p.m.
