The West Middle School basketball teams had their first home games of the season on Nov. 2 against Coffee County Middle School.
Lady Bobcats fall to Lady Raiders
The girls’ team lost to Coffee County 47-31. They scored 25 of their points in the second half but had dug too big of a hole in the first half.
Joslynn Lidstrom led West in scoring with 9 points, hitting three 3-pointers in the third quarter. Lizzy Sharpton had a good night on defense with 4 steals and 2 blocks.
West turned the ball over on their first possession. Steal by Lizzy Sharpton. Madison McCarl got an offensive rebound. The Lady Raiders scored first to go up 2-0. McCarl got a steal then made a pass to Sharpton for an assist. Coffee County hit a 3. Another turnover for the Lady Bobcats. McCarl grabbed a defensive rebound, then got an offensive board. West turned it over, keeping it at 5-2. There was a steal by Lidstrom then another turnover by West before forcing a turnover from Coffee County. The Lady Bobcats turned it over and the Lady Raiders scored a layup off of it. Addison Vincent fed McCarl for a score making it 7-4. They forced a turnover with 12.7 left in quarter. Vincent got an offensive rebound and missed the buzzer beater, leaving the score at 7-4 Lady Raiders after the first period.
Vincent got another offensive board to open the second stanza then West turned it over. Sharpton blocked a shot, but Coffee County got the loose ball and scored. The Lady Bobcats committed another turnover. McCarl blocked a shot but Coffee County corralled the ball and scored, going up 11-4. Another West turnover lead to a Coffee County layup. West called a timeout with 4:26 left in the half. Once again the Lady Raiders scored a layup off of a turnover. Lidstrom got a steal after a Lady Bobcat turnover but McCarl got herself another steal. Coffee County hit a layup. Kenzie Farrell grabbed an offensive rebound and scored the put back to make it 17-6. Coffee County had some free throws, they missed the first and made the second. Lidstrom with another steal. Vincent got fouled shooting but she missed both but got the rebound on the second shot. The Lady Raiders had another trip to the line and made both to take the 20-6 lead with 1:39 left in the second quarter. West turned it over and committed a foul. Coffee County hit the first and missed the second, Alaiah Treuhaft grabbed the rebound. The Lady Bobcats committed their twelfth turnover of the half. Vincent blocked a shot, the Lady Raiders got the ball and hit a 3. West forced a turnover but missed the buzzer beater. Coffee County led 24-6 at the half. The Lady Bobcats hurt themselves giving up 13 points off of turnovers and second chance points.
Sharpton stole the ball and hit Vincent for a layup to open the third quarter. Coffee County scored a layup, then West turned it over. Treuhaft brought in a rebound. The Lady Raiders hit another layup. Vincent secured a rebound. West had another turnover. Farrell grabbed the next rebound. West committed a turnover that turned into a layup for Coffee County. Then Lidstrom hit her first 3. The Lady Raiders hit a layup. The Lady ‘Cats had another turnover. Sharpton got a steal then West turned it over again. Farrell got another rebound. Sharpton grabbed an offensive board and it turned into a 3 for Lidstrom. Farrell stole the ball then McCarl got the offensive rebound before getting fouled on the put back. She missed the first and hit the second to make it 32-15 with 1:16 left in the quarter. McCarl grabbed another rebound before a West turnover. Coffee County hit a long 2. Then Sharpton passed to Lidstrom for a 3 to make it 34-18 with 41.1 in third. Farrell blocked a shot and Lidstrom grabbed the ball. Sharpton stole the ball again. They couldn’t get a shot before the buzzer, the score was 34–18 going into final frame.
West forced a turnover then turned it over to start the fourth. Coffee County shot and made two free throws. Then they got an offensive rebound and put back, 38-18. Vincent shot two free throws, hit the first and got the rebound after missing the second. McCarl got a steal and then assisted Sharpton on her layup. West forced a turnover. Lady Raiders split free throws to go up 39-21. Vincent stole the ball and hit a layup. Coffee County then got put into bonus and hit both shots from the line. They went to the line again and hit the second shot. West turned it over for a Lady Raider layup. Farrell got fouled on her put back attempt after grabbing offensive rebound. She made the second shot. Lidstrom with a steal, then assist to Sharpton for a 3 making it 44-27 with 1:53 left. There were more free throws for Coffee County after a West turnover. They hit the first and missed second. McCarl got the rebound and Vincent scored on the possession. McCarl hit a runner off of Sharpton’s pass to make it 47-31 after some Lady Raider free throws.
Bobcats caught by Raiders
The Bobcats were defeated 36-27 by the Raiders. West had a 19-11 lead at the half but a 2 point third quarter was costly.
Zion Jeffery led the team in scoring with 9 points. Price Harden was next on the team with 6 points from two made 3-pointers.
Coffee County missed two free throws to open the game. Jeffery grabbed the rebound. On the next defensive possession he blocked a shot to force a jump ball. Harden hit Landin Johnson for the first basket of the game. Jeffery stole the ball and took it down for a layup. Then Johnson got a steal. West turned it over. Jeffery grabbed the rebound and got fouled shooting a layup. He hit the first and missed the second. Harden got the rebound. Jeffery hit him in the corner for a 3 to take the 8-0 lead with 2:35 left in the first quarter. Coffee County took a timeout. The Raiders got an offensive rebound, made the put back and got fouled. They hit the free throw to make it 8-3. West forced a turnover. Blake Melton found Trea King for a 3. The Raiders went back to the line and only hit the second shot. Melton banked in a 3 to take a 14-4 lead into the second.
Nate Wilkerson grabbed a rebound. Harden grabbed one, then King got one. Harden hit his second 3 after Jaylen Malone kicked it out. Harden got another rebound. West forced another turnover. The Raiders scored next to make it 17-6. Then they got an offensive rebound that turned into a 3. They went to the line and hit both shots to make it 17-11 with 1:26. West turned it over. Jeffery got a rebound and then was fouled shooting. He missed both but Johnson got the rebound. Wilkerson hit a layup as time expired, taking a 19-11 lead into the locker room.
Coffee County went on a 15-2 run over the duration of the third quarter to take a 26-21 lead. Cooper Knight scored the lone basket on an assist from Harden. West turned it over four times in the quarter and gave up three offensive rebounds that turned into points. The Raiders went 4 out of 10 from the free throw line.
The Raiders hit a runner to open the quarter. Jeffery got a rebound and got fouled. West turned it over. Coffee County got an offensive rebound and was fouled on the put back. Both shots were missed, Harden got the rebound. Coffee County scored next to make it 30-21 with 4:37 left. Johnson grabbed a rebound, gave it to Jeffery and he went coast to coast for the layup. He was fouled and converted the and-one to make it 30-24. King snagged a long rebound. Jeffery got a steal and scored a layup off of it. He was fouled on the layup. He made the shot. Coffee County got free throws for a technical. They hit both making it 32-27 with 2:56 left. Melton got a steal. A jump ball was forced by King. West called a timeout with 1:30 left. Coffee County fouled putting Bobcats in the 2-shot bonus. West missed both shots and then turned it over on their next possession. West had to foul as they were down 32-27 with under a minute left. The Raiders made both shots. The 3-point attempt from West was blocked and Coffee County got the ball, effectively ending the game with 14 seconds left. Both free throws were made making it 36-27. West turned it over on their last possession.
Both teams beat their rival East Middle School on Monday night. They are back in action at home Thursday when they host North Franklin.
