DUI charges come after road rage incident

Drunk driving charges have been leveled against a motorist who allegedly road raged against an off-duty officer.

The suspect, John R. Cannon, 40, was charged with DUI after he tailed the off-duty officer into the parking lot of the Tullahoma Police Station and then did a U-turn in the nearby Café parking lot. Unknown to the suspect, much of his aggressive driving was witnessed by a Tullahoma Police officer who had been summoned to investigate the road rage incident.

“As (the off-duty officer) turned right onto North Jackson Street, Mr. Cannon followed behind him leaving only a few feet of distance and aggressively braking,” the police report reads, noting the officer made a traffic stop once she observed Cannon making the unsafe U-turn. “I observed an odor of alcohol and slurred speech. Mr. Cannon said he did have a few drinks about an hour prior.”

The victim in the case was upset since he had two small children in the vehicle with him at the time. Cannon maintained it was the off-duty officer who had been the aggressive driver.

With Cannon reportedly too impaired to perform field sobriety tests, he was arrested for DUI and taken for booking. He later would reportedly tell officers that he should not have been on the roadway.
