Sheriff’s department warns of impersonation scam
S
The Coffee County Sheriff’s Department is advising residents of scammers impersonating members of the department.
In a statement, the department said it has received calls advising that citizens have received calls from individuals posing as members of the Sheriff’s Department.
“The callers identify themselves as members of the sheriff’s department and advise victims that they have an active warrant and if the victim pays a fee this will satisfy the warrant and they will not be arrested,” officials with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department said. “The phone scammers request Green Dot cards or other forms of payment, possibly credit card or banking information.”
The Sheriff’s Department does not call individuals and notify them of criminal warrant and will not ask for money through Green Dot cards, credit cards and so on.
Officials advise anyone who receives a call to not give the individuals any information, hang up and call their local law enforcement agency.
If anyone has fallen victim to this please notify your local law enforcement.
