Man drowns after jumping into Duck River

The body of a man who dove into the Duck River in neighboring Bedford County last week has been recovered after extensive dragging operations near Fisherman’s Park.

The body of Christopher Lee Richardson, 50 of Shelbyville was found about 40 feet down the river from the dam. He was last seen diving into the river with a female around mid-afternoon last Thursday. He had entered the water at the old power plant building in downtown Shelbyville and it was suspected that he may have hit his head when he dove in. That suspicion was confirmed when a mark on his forehead was noted when his body was recovered, perhaps explaining why he did not resurface.

The woman who jumped into the water with Richardson was rescued by a bystander. The woman could reportedly not swim. She was taken to Vanderbilt Bedford for treatment.

It has not been revealed why the couple jumped into the river.
