Friend of Silence

I love the sound of music

I love the sound of children’s laughter

But I am a primitive, for …

I also love the silence that comes after.

I enjoy the lonesome sound of the wind

And that of a gentle summer rain

The sound of my favorite tree

Brushing against the window pane.

The rhythm of the ocean waves

Crashing upon the shore

Then sliding back and bringing the silence as before.

I am friend of silence

I want to be sure to hear

The message my Lord has for me

As He whispers in my ear.

God is a friend of silence, too

For He speaks in a still, small voice.

To be blessed with the sweet sound of it

Is reason to rejoice.
