Highland Rim Ride of Silence set for May 17

Highland Rim Bike Club Ride of Silence will be held on May 17 to raise awareness to bike safety.

Organizers are extending an invitation not just to club members but the public as a whole ride in the annual event.

“We want to make sure the public knows they are welcomed to participate in our Ride of Silence event,” he said. “One hundred percent of any donations will be given to the Schaefer family.”

This year’s ride will be held on May 17 at 7 p.m. beginning at Frazier McEwen Park in Tullahoma with a police escort. There will also be a bag pipe performance of Amazing Grace and a prayer of safety for cyclists on the road.

The annual Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 9 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no national sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of cyclists who have been killed or injured.
