Boy Scout project benefits Mt. Garner Cemetery
Decherd’s Mt. Garner Cemetery has recently been the recipient of a special project by Boy Scout Matthew Coffelt to place small flags on veterans graves to pay tribute to them for their service to their country.
Coffelt, who did the project as part of an Eagle Scout requirement, said that, at the direction of Mike Holmes, Troop 184 leader, he decided to pursue the venture that involved setting up the tubular bases to hold the flags and then placing them and the flags at the gravesites.
He said the project also involved reviewing a cemetery map to locate about 300 gravesites where veterans lie in their final resting places.
Coffelt said the organizational effort to carry out the project lasted about a year to reach a point where two Boy Scout teams with as many members could put the flags in place.
Decherd Mayor Mary Nell Hess said Coffelt’s efforts through the project are greatly appreciated.
“He’s done a great service to the city of Decherd,” she said. “We’re very proud of him.”
Coffelt recently graduated from Franklin County High School and is gearing up to attend the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Franklin County with a goal to become a welder.
