Organizers picked a perfect fall day for their sixth annual Oktoberfest on the grounds of South Jackson Performing Arts Center as the sounds of polka music and the smell of brats filled the air, brining hundreds to the front lawn.
Oktoberfest 2023, a free event sponsored by Cherokee Distributing and George Dickel, continued through the day and into the night, the last notes hit around 8 p.m. from the Patio Stage. Attendees, many dressed up in lederhosen and authentic Bavarian garb, had a variety of things to do while enjoying various German-inspired food and beer from several food trucks and craft vendors during the free event. A history and tasting by George Dickel kicked off the event just after noon as the Sun was still eclipsing in the sky during the partial solar eclipse that blocked 60 percent of the Sun. Some attendees were oblivious to the celestial event as they watched the Tennessee Vols beat the Texas A&M Aggies 20-13 on the big screen inside the performing arts center.
The day was filled with activities including a kids donut eating contest, dog costume contest, brat eating contest, costume contests for adults, youth and kids, a yodeling contest and stein hoisting for youth, men and women. Wednesday from The Adams Family won honors the kid’s category while Spike’s “favorite” toy from Toy Story won the teen costume contest. The Happiness Band provided the soundtrack for the evening, playing everything from polka to classic rock from the stage. Also on display were several classic German automobiles which parked on the front lawn of the campus.
South Jackson PAC Chairman Greg Gressel said the organization has recognized the German influence in the area and encourage everyone to attend the event.
“We are excited to celebrate that culture and have this great event for the community on the grounds of South Jackson Performing Arts,” Gressel said.
