New hangars approved for Tullahoma airport

Tullahoma Airport was recently authorized by the Planning Commission to pursue their plan to build 11 new hangars and one building at the Ledford Mill Road exit of the airport.

According to a memo from Director of Planning and Codes Charles Rush, “The applicant is proposing to build 11 hangars (5,400 sq ft) and one (1,750 sq ft) building on the Ledford Mill Road exit at the Tullahoma Airport. The hangars will have access to the NW Taxiway Lane as well as the Taxiway connect to the runways. Currently, three existing hangars are located within a close vicinity of the 12 proposed buildings. IFC 2015 code for hangars is the following: 10-ft separation minimum between hangars and two-hour firewalls, 50-ft separation from any structure on all sides without fire separation, also option of fire sprinkle and foam protection system, and 10ft minimum separation between hangars.”

“The Tullahoma Airport Authority, through its Chairman or designee, shall make a recommendation to the Planning Commission regarding any proposed construction within the AO-1 zone. Any recommendation to disapprove must include a written justification. Failure to provide a recommendation from the Planning Commission will be considered as a neutral (neither approve nor disapprove) recommendation.”

Jeff Jackson, the applicant speaking on behalf of the Tullahoma Airport, explained “What we’re trying to achieve is to have more hangars available for people at the airport. We’ll have two hangars per building. Our goal is to have more activity at the airport, and there seems to be a need for more hangars there.”

Commissioner Bobbie Wilson asked if the airport authority had approved the construction of the new hangars. Jackson verified that they did.

Rush asked about a proposed building, but Jackson told him they had decided to take that building off of their plan.

Rush said that the staff recommended to approve the project.

Commissioner Andy Hall made the motion to approve, and Commissioner Alexander Rice seconded. The project passed unanimously.
