The splendor of autumn

N

When living in the Midwest

Autumn was my favorite time of year

The days were getting shorter

The smell of firewood in the air.

Brisk winds began to bow

Bringing the beautiful leaves to the ground

The high school games were big events

The football queen was crowned

October brought Halloween

In November came Thanksgiving

But, in-between, we have the joy

Of hayrides and bonfires in the evening.

There were Chrysanthemums galore

In bronze and brilliant yellow

Corsages for the ladies

From her favorite beau.

Pumpkins graced our doorway

Cider graced our table

Apples in our lunchbox

A walk in the woods, if we were able.

A time for sweaters and for hats

A reminder that the snow will be coming soon

But for now, we just ignore

The sound of winter’s tune

The splendor that I remember

Of the autumns of yesterday

Brings memories of God’s blessings

And joy to me today.
