Schools must strengthen community relationships

J

Schools are most successful when all members of the community actively participate and work together. Together educators and parents can create a supportive environment that benefits students, parents, and taxpayers. W. Edwards Deming believed in putting everyone to work to achieve any desired change. He would say “Transformation is everybody’s job.”

We develop strong relationships and address community expectations by being authentic. We must understand this is a continuous endeavor. It is not only about communicating with individuals but also connecting with them.

It is imperative to establish robust and meaningful relationships within a community while nurturing a favorable and encouraging atmosphere for every school. Whether you are an educator, administrator, or parent, there are some vital principles and actions to consider when developing these relationships.

We should start with a basic assumption that the goal is always to improve student learning and see children succeed. If that is not your objective, the field of education is not for you. Policymakers should allow public schools increased flexibility. We would like to see increased learning opportunities, encourage innovative learning models, establish new forms of accountability, make schools a unit of improvement, and relieve schools of bureaucratic paperwork and procedures.

As educators, we must engage with families. We should welcome and appreciate parents for their contributions and encourage them to be active in the schools their children attend. We must reach out to new families to understand their transition experience and offer support. We need to provide books and resources related to topics families express interest in. Administrators should regularly gather staff feedback through surveys to understand their perspectives.

Teachers and staff play a crucial role in the school community. Their well-being impacts student outcomes. Administration should build a strong foundation with staff, as it directly influences student success. Together, we educate a community, a state, and a nation.

We must connect with people, and be authentic, honest, and true to ourselves. We can listen to others, and empathize with their emotions, motivations, and concerns. Our approaches should be tailored to resonate with the community as we share their vision of student success.

Building strong relationships in a community requires effort and patience. Be present, offer help, and show support to build trust. Focus on positive contributions, be adaptable, and be open to change. This is vital for schools and educators too. Some districts excel in community outreach – the state should take note.

Networking is key for external knowledge and community impact that benefits students. We should welcome feedback as we refine our approach and focus on lasting relationships for sustainable growth. Strong relationships take time to build. We should be flexible and open to change, demonstrating our commitment to growth and improvement.

Building a strong community in schools requires truthfulness, effort, and empathy. Educators, administrators, and parents must have a meaningful relationship for their students to succeed. This requires ongoing dedication, patience, and a genuine interest in building a successful school for the benefit of the community.

Communities should support schools in creating optimal learning environments that allow students to thrive. Establishing strong relationships with community members, parents, and students is the most important responsibility of a school administrator.
