Lads Bobcats win Area Championship

West Middle School topped E.O. Coffman this past Saturday 40-33 to claim the TMSAA class 2A area 9 title.

WMS had three players selected to the All-Area Tournament team: Lizzy Sharpton, Addison Vincent and Kenzie Farrell. The Lady Bobcats’ Zoie Roberts was also named the Area Tournament MVP.

West will host Neely’s Bend in the first round of the Sectional tournament tonight at 6 p.m.

West started slow in the Championship game, scoring just 4 points in the first half but the Lady ‘Cats finished strong scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback against the number one seed and win the championship as the three seed.

WMS went scoreless in the first quarter and held E.O. Coffman to just 4 points. The second quarter was slow but even with both teams scoring 4 points. Vincent and Roberts scored 2 points each for the Bobcats. The trailed 8-4 at halftime.

The third quarter mirrored the second, with both teams scoring 13 points. Sharpton led the Lady ‘Cats in scoring in the quarter with 9 points. Vincent hit two free throws and Farrell scored the other 2 points. E.O. Coffman led 21-17 after the third quarter.

The Lady Bobcats showed out in the fourth, having the highest scoring quarter of the game for either team. They won the quarter 23-12 to overcome the four-point deficit to start the quarter. Roberts led the team in the fourth with 7 points, all from the foul line. Joslynn Lidstrom scored 6. She hit a 3-pointer, a free throw and a field goal. Sharpton scored 5 points, she hit two shots and one free throw. Farrell scored 4 points, she hit two free throws and a shot from the field. Vincent scored the other point in the quarter at the foul line. West took advantage of their chances at the line hitting 11 foul shots in the fourth while Coffman only hit one.

West had to take on the number two ranked team in the area in the semifinal round. They opened the game strong with a 16-4 first quarter. Sharpton, Farrell, Vincent and Madison McCarl all scored 4 points in the quarter. They all made two shots from the field.

The second quarter was not as friend for the Bobcats as they lost the second 9-4. Vincent and Adalyn Nelson scored 2 points each in the period. They took a 20-13 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was a struggle for both teams, they tied the quarter 5-5. Lidstrom hit a 3 for West and Sharpton hit another shot from the field. The Lady ‘Cats took a 6 point lead to the fourth.

The fourth quarter was full of action, both teams scored double digits for the first time all game. West was led by Sharpton, Farrell and McCarl with 3 points each in the fourth.  They each hit a shot and a free throw. The Lionettes made a comeback and got the game to 36-34 with 15 seconds left. The forced a Lady Bobcat turnover with 4.8 seconds left. West then made Cannon County throw a wild pass out of bounds to get the ball back with the score still 36-34. The ball was safely inbounded to Nelson with 3.6 seconds left. She calmly walked to line and knocked down the first shot to go up 37-34. The second shot missed and the Lionettes were able to get the ball to the 3-poiont line and take a buzzer beater, but it missed off the rim.

The first game of the week for West was a home game hosting the sixth seeded Spring Hill. The Lady ‘Cats were led in scoring by Evvie Moore with 11 points. Farrell was the other player in double figures with 10.

West dominated from the opening tip, not allowing Spring Hill to score until there was 1:08 on the clock in the second quarter.

They scored 16 points in the first quarter, led by Farrell with 6. Sharpton scored the first 5 points of the game. She hit a 3 after the Lady ‘Cats won the tip and then hit a layup after getting a steal. Moore and Roberts both scored 2 points in the first. Vincent scored 1 point in the opening quarter.

West continued playing despite the score. They added 19 points in the second, Moore led the way with 6. Vincent had 3 after hitting a free throw. Sharpton, Farrell, McCarl, Nelson and Aubrey Bunn each scored 2 points.

The third quarter was the Lady Bobcats worst scoring quarter with 11 points. Nelson led the way with 4 points. Vincent scored 3 points, converting an and-one. McCarl and Sharpton both scored 2 points.

The Bobcats added another 13 points in the fourth quarter. Moore, Lidstrom and Bunn led the way with 3 points each. Moore and Lidstrom both drained a shot from downtown while Bunn hit a layup and a free throw. Farrell and Vincent both scored 2 points in the fourth.
