James Michael “Mike” Matheson Obituary
James Michael “Mike” Matheson, of Tullahoma, passed this life on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024 at Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital at the age of 85.
Mr. Matheson was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to the late B.A. “Matty” and Blanche Mullican Matheson. He was a native of the southwest prior to moving to Florida where he met his bride-to-be, Dorothy “Dotti” Decima, at Clearwater High School. They married in 1956 and had two daughters prior to moving to Tullahoma, where their son was born. Mr. Matheson worked as an Instrument Technician at Sverdrup Technologies at AEDC and retired after 38 years of service. He was known for his dry sense of humor and the practical jokes he used to pull on his co-workers. Mr. Matheson was an active member of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church in Tullahoma, where he was a Lay Reader and a Chalice Bearer. He was a life-long Anglican, baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church and was a founding member of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church. In his spare time, Mr. Matheson also enjoyed woodworking, fishing, reading, and working puzzles, especially Sudoku. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mollie Gleaves and Patricia Still. Mr. Matheson is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy “Dotti” J. Matheson; three children, Virginia Smith (Steve) of Loganville, Georgia, Michele Thompson (Jeff) of Reno, Nevada, and Timothy Matheson (Leigh) of Collierville, Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Steven, Matthew, Peter, Patrick, William, Cooper, and Sara; and two great-grandchildren, Dakota and Sean.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Kilgore Funeral Home from 6 – 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either St. Stephen’s Anglican Church in Tullahoma or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
