The Bulldozer of Progress – Part 1

A

Believe me when I say that I am not anti-progress. However, as a historian and general lover of stylish and attractive buildings, I do miss those when they are knocked down and some nondescript business boxes go up their place. Not being a native of Tullahoma, I know I missed out on some of the city’s most fashionable houses and business buildings from years ago. Thanks to some friends who have generously shared their knowledge and photos with me, I at least know what some of those places looked like before. I’d like to share a few with you over the next couple of weeks.

This week’s photos come from two sources. Mike O’Neal provided some of them, and the others were taken by the late Fred Kite. Mr. Kite gave his photos to Lee Yoder to pass on to the Historic Preservation Society of Tullahoma. Lee allowed me to copy them and I will pass them on to the Preservation Society at our next meeting.

And if you have an interest in Tullahoma history, I invite you to consider joining the Historic Preservation Society of Tullahoma. Watch the Facebook page (Facebook.com/HPSTullahoma) and the Events section of The Tullahoma News for meeting dates and times.

Do you have some old Tullahoma photos and accompanying stories to share? You can contact me at alanmayes@lighttube.net.
