Tullahoma Guardian Special, Part 5
A
This particular page of the winter 1940/41 special edition of The Tullahoma Guardian showcases several businesses and also tells us that the photographer was a Mr. John F. Goforth, who is listed as a pilot photographer from Chattanooga. Obviously most of these photos we’ve shown were taken on the ground, but the paper also had a four-page ad for Chattanooga that included some aerial photos. Those were no doubt from his specialty.
Regarding local businesses, the ad for W.H. Wilson & Son has no photo, but instead describes the company’s retail lines. They were located at 120 W. Lincoln St. Daves-Ramsey Funeral Home’s photo should look familiar, and half of their name is, too. That’s now Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home on N. Jackson.
McDowell Lumber Co. was located on S. Atlantic St., according to both the 1940 and 1949 telephone books. Pan-Am Petroleum Products was listed as being on S. Anderson St. in the 1940 telephone book and this photo was taken looking west from where Kustom Window Tinting is currently. At one time, that former service station was a Pan-Am station.
J.M. Carney & Co. was a tobacco and candy distributor located on S. Atlantic St. It does not appear in the telephone book by 1949. Smartt’s Service Station, a Sinclair dealer, was shown as being on Lincoln, probably E. Lincoln. Tullahoma Ice & Coal Co. was on E. Volney St., seemingly about where Irving Materials’ lot is now.
The M.R. Campbell name turns up often in Tullahoma business history. At the time of this Tullahoma Guardian special, their lumber yard was located on N. Atlantic St., about where DKI Services has a facility. That’s likely where they did their building and real estate business, too. Unfortunately, the chiropractor, Dr. E.H. Quinsenberry (possibly Quisenberry) is a mystery. He doesn’t appear in the 1940 or 1949 telephone books, so we don’t know where he was located.
Next week, we’ll wrap up our look at this special edition of The Tullahoma Guardian. In the meantime, if you have more photos and information about these businesses or know exact locations, please reach out.
