City breaks ground at Johnson Lane

This past week, city officials broke ground at Johnson Lane Park as construction begins for restrooms and concessions pavilion.
In April, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the signing of a $768,195 contract with C&H Commercial Contractors, LLC for the construction of the Johnson Lane restrooms and concessions pavilion. The board approved the quote for the project in February.
City officials then gathered at Johnson Lane Park to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the recreation area. Mayor Ray Knowis said he was happy to see the project finally getting underway following the park’s other milestones since its establishment in 2000. These include the introduction and expansion of four tournament-sized soccer fields in 2007, the installation of lights to make two fields fully lit and two fields partially lit, along with extending the park’s operational hours, in 2017 and now with this project which will see sheltered areas, ADA-compliant restrooms and concession operations when completed.
He added that over the years, Tullahoma has become to be known as a sports town, and having concessions and restrooms at the park are important to both him and to those who go to the park.
“They’ll be important to all those visitors that will be coming to this facility here,” Knowis said. “I’m very extremely thankful for this board who have made this possible.”
According to Parks and Recreation Director JP Kraft, the Johnson Lane Recreation Area has always strived to meet the evolving needs of the Tullahoma community.
“Each milestone represents a step forward in our commitment to providing exceptional recreational opportunities for residents and visitors,” he said.
Emma Cook, Community Engagement Officer of Tullahoma, said the completion of the new Johnson Lane Recreation Area facility will open a world of possibilities for event hosting, transforming the park into a dynamic hub of community activity. Cook said with its upgraded amenities and versatile spaces, the park will stand ready to accommodate a wide range of events, fostering vibrant experiences for all.
She added that as Johnson Lane Recreation Area evolves into a premier destination for events and recreation, it will become a magnet for both visitors from near and far, as well as sports tournaments and other events, which will inject vitality into the local economy.
“Restaurants, shops, and other businesses in the surrounding area stand to benefit from increased foot traffic, enjoying a boost in sales and visibility,” Cook said. “By attracting visitors who seek entertainment, dining, shopping, and lodging options, the park becomes a catalyst for economic growth and prosperity in our community.”
Cook said that the appeal of Johnson Lane Recreation Area extends beyond its immediate vicinity, drawing visitors from neighboring towns and cities to Tullahoma’s doorstep.
“As visitors explore all that our community has to offer, they contribute to the local tourism industry, patronizing hotels, restaurants, and attractions,” officials said. “This influx of tourism dollars generates revenue, supports local businesses, and showcases the unique character and hospitality of our community on a regional scale.”
